The Village of Alton is on the northwest side of Caledon. It is less than 10 minutes to Orangeville.
Alton was incorporated in the early 1850’s and, according to a brief history by William R. Meek, at one time, it had 8 power dams that powered the many mills in the area. This properous timeframe would explain the abundance of century homes in Alton today. Some have been gutted and rebuilt while others are still waiting for an industrious person with vision to bring them back to their former charm.
Along with Alton’s historical buildings you will find bungalows and 2 storey homes with prices starting from the low $300,000s. Often newcomers to Caledon find their first home in Alton. It is not unusual to see a game of street hockey being played on the quiet, child-friendly streets of this community.
Alton also has a growing artistic community, with shops along Queen Street and into the old Alton Mill. The Alton Mill has been rehabilitated and the building & shops are more exciting than ever. The buildings and scenery around The Mill are certainly worth a gander. Of course, Alton is home to The Millcroft Inn & Spa which is a luxurious over-night destination for those looking for a spectacular meal, quiet surroundings and the opportunity to relax in the spa or explore the neighbourhood.
Alton’s big secret, however, is Ray’s 3rd Generation Bistro Bakery. Don’t let the name fool you, Ray’s is way more than a bakery. Chef Jason offers exceptional gourmet meals at prices that will make you a “regular”. Local musical talent, a casually elegant ambiance & the option to sit outside in the private, grassy courtyard make dining at Ray’s a completely enjoyable experience.
Alton has its own Public School with children going to Mayfield Secondary School for high school. French Immersion is offered by Herb Campbell Public School with high school FI being offered by Humberview Secondary School in Bolton.
Alton is larger than many people realize, at first. It has the quintessential general store, with Ray’s Bakery for light lunches, gourmet dinners, baked goods and other delights. Alton is also home to a senior’s home, gardening centre, antique shop, a golf course and many small arts & crafts stores. The library and ball diamonds round out a smartly self-contained village.
